Underworld: Blood Wars Or Bloody Mess? - The Hottest

The next installment in the blockbuster franchise, UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS follows Vampire death dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David (Theo James) and his father Thomas (Charles Dance), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

There comes a point in any franchise where you step back and go: Can we really keep this going? Can we really go there with these characters? We are there with Underworld. Now don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the first 3 films. The 4th film felt very underwhelming, and frankly cobbled together. Having Kate Beckinsale continue to reprise her role as Selene is honestly the only reason I would go and see #5 and #6. Yes, although this article is about Blood Wars, the fifth film in the series, a sixth is already confirmed in development.

This feels like the resident evil franchise which just won’t let go. As a fan, I will see it, once it comes out on home video. The networks keep making them because they make money. The first 4 films have grossed over $458 million worldwide on a combined $177 million budget for all 4 films. You don’t have to be a math genius to see why Sony keeps making them. We are coming off a horrible summer for movies. This film is set for Jan 2017.

A TV series based on the franchise is also in the works according to Deadline. Bradley James has been cast as the main villain. Outlander and Game Of Thrones fans will rejoice to hear that Tobias Menzies also has a role as a new Lycan leader. An interesting note about the success of a franchise like this.

Many other films who have tried to get 3 or more films have failed terribly and gotten great reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet the Underworld series which has done so well financially received an average score of 25% across all 4 films. This further underscores just how out of touch and useless a site like that has become in this day of films. “Critics” as they call them on Rotten Tomatoes are far out of touch with the general audience. Don’t get me wrong, they always have been but this just proves it in the numbers.

So is Blood Wars going to be a bloody mess? I doubt it. They have a very simple formula and it works: Sexy vampire Selene wants to do away with the Lycan and Vampire fighting with hybrid husband and fight to save the world. Stick with that and they can keep making films. There does need to be an end game though. Unlike the vampires, we don’t have all of eternity to see this war ended.
