Wolverine 3: Who or what are Old Man Logan and Weapon X? - The Hottest

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine 3 is filming in New Orleans with the title Weapon X - But what is Weapon X, who is Old Man Logan, and what about female Wolverine known as X-23?

What’s Weapon X?

Weapon X refers to the government genetic research facility in the X-Men comic and cinematic universes.

The Weapon X Project is responsible for turning the likes of Wolverine, Sabretooth and Deadpool into living weapons.

It’s also the codename given to Wolverine, the original Weapon X, after having his skeleton coated in adamantium, making him indestructable.
There were flashbacks of this process in X-Men 2, which Wolverine had memory loss from.

He soon remembers what happened to him when he comes across the film’s villain, William Stryker, who carried out the transformation.

The film series explored the process in great depth in the prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which also saw Ryan Reynolds’ first turn as a mouthless Deadpool.

After the timeline changed in X-Men: Days of Future Past, Wolverine was still captured by Stryker, but earlier in 1973.

Stryker then incarcerated Wolverine in the Weapon X facility, ready to transform him.
In X-Men: Apocalypse, set in 1983, we saw Wolverine break out of the facility in his Weapon X head gear, with the help of a young Cyclops and Jean Grey.

X-Men: Apocalypse’s end credits scene saw a man in a suit picking up vials of Wolverine’s blood at the abandoned Weapon X facility.

The man rummaged through dead bodies and used bullets, looking for leftover vials of his blood that were labelled Weapon X.

With the vials of Logan’s blood in his possession, the mysterious man placed them in a briefcase that was labelled with the words “ESSEX CORP.”

Who’s Old Man Logan?

The first images of the Wolverine 3 set show an older, grey-haired Logan (Wolverine’s real name) with full facial hair.

X-Men producer Simon Kinberg has already confirmed certain details surrounding the film’s plot.

He said "It’s a violent, R-rated, futuristic western.”
Fans of the comics will hear alarm bells ringing as this sounds just like the series of comics that form the graphic novel Wolverine: Old Man Logan.

The graphic novel was written by Mark Millar, who is well known for his bloody adult superhero narratives that have had many the film adaption.

They include the likes of Kick-Ass, Kingsmen: The Secret Service and Marvel’s Civil War.
Old Man Logan sees an older, gruffer Wolverine living on a farm in California with his wife and children, having sworn never to release his claws again after a horrible past event.

Threatened to be evicted from the land, Logan joins a blind Hawkeye on promise of pay during a trip to New York to deliver a drug drop off.

The two elderly superheroes head off on the ultimate road trip from coast to coast across a post-apocalyptic waste land ruled by Marvel’s villains.

While Fox own the rights to X-Men and Disney owns The Avengers in their Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is unlikely that a pure adaption of the storyline is possible.

Instead we’re going to see a Wolverine 3 based on certain aspects of Old Man Logan and the Weapon X storyline, that includes X-23, a female Wolverine.

But as Jackman bows out, will X-23 replace him as Wolverine in the X-Men movies entirely?

And is she the “feral animal” Zoe in the leaked character biography for the film?

We’ll just have to wait and see.

Wolverine 3 will be released in UK cinemas on March 2, 2017.
