‘Moana’ songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda took inspiration from Manhattan childhood home - The Hottest
To write “How Far I’ll Go” — the signature song in “Moana” — Lin-Manuel Miranda went just 20 blocks.

Seeking a youthful touch, he traveled back to his childhood home in Manhattan’s Washington Heights.

“The way I wrote the lyrics is I went back to my parents’ house and locked myself up in my childhood bedroom,” said the songwriter.

“Because I feel like when I’m there I can remember what it’s like to be a teenager, to be a kid and feel so freaked out and scared and excited for life. So that was my way of getting into character.”

Landing the gig, Miranda had fulfilled his own childhood dream. He wanted to write Disney songs ever since he saw “The Little Mermaid” at age 9.
He got the job before “Hamilton” opened — which led to the wacky experience of sometimes wearing his blouse from the hit Broadway show while writing songs for “Moana.”

“Anytime I needed a break from Founding Fathers,” Miranda said.
“I’d go and get on the ocean in my mind and sail across the sea with Moana and Maui and Tala. So it was a really nice getaway in my mind when all the ‘Hamilton’ craziness was happening.”
