Hardcore fans of the Star Wars universe are already twitching and convulsing with sheer anxious joy awaiting the upcoming spinoff film directed by Gareth Edwards and written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be the first ever standalone Star Wars anthology film as well as the ninth theatrical feature film in the franchise, and from the little bits we've seen from the trailer, this tale is looking to be quite a different take on Lucas's usual Space Opera film format. Whether your a Star Wars fanatic or not, Cinemaniacs has scoured the web to answer some questions you might have before Rogue One comes blasting into cinemas at light speed close to the end of this year.
1. Where does Rogue One Fit in the Star Wars Timeline?
The film is set between the time frames of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.
2. Whats the Story with Rogue One?
Basically remember that giant moon shaped planet destroyer called the Death Star? Well Rogue one is the story of how a rebel team, lead by Jyn Erso embarked on a secret mission to steal the plans for it in order to undermine the evil galactic empire.
3. Is there Force usage and other cool Jedi like stuff in this?
Although there will be references to the force and of course understanding that the "Force is all around us", the writers and director have hinted that this film is more focused on the more human aspects of the Star Wars universe, foregoing lightsabers for high powered blasters and tech based machinery. The director has said Rogue one will resemble a war movie more than a space odyssey and show the struggle of individuals as opposed to the skills of the Jedi.
Jyn Erso played by the excellent Felicity Jones does seem to be a little antsy and short tempered at first glance. According to an article from the Guardian, Erso has agreed to a deal with the rebel alliance higher-ups that if she agrees to partake in the virtually impossible mission of stealing those pesky Death Star plans, then her not so tidy criminal record will be wiped completely clean.
5. Do we get to see any VADER?!
Wait for it, wait for it....YES! The infamous and merciless Sith Lord will return as Senator Palpatine's right hand of choking power with the role reprised by the original man himself, James Earl Jones to bring back that classic Vader voice that we so know and love. Although the Darth will have limited screen time and play a more background sinister role in the Imperial goings on, you can bet fanboys are gonna split their shorts in glee when he shows up on screen.
6. Deathtroopers?
Yup that's right. Lead by the latest Imperial-Dude-Controlled-By-a-Sith-Lord Orson Krennic (played by Australian character actor Ben Mendelson) the Deathtroopers are meant to be the deadlier upgrade to our familiar and somewhat bumbling Stormtroopers of old.
7. What is Rouge One?
Rogue Squadron was formed after the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in which the first death star was destroyed by a team of X-wing fighters (who initially called themselves Red Squadron) lead by their Rogue Leader Luke Skywalker. Although its yet to be determined exactly what Rogue One implies, speculation suggest that it either makes reference to being the first rogue team formed by the rebels and lead by Jyn Erso, or perhaps to the woman herself. We'll just have to wait till the opening credits start to roll this December!
