Russia’s Superhero Movie Guardians - The Hottest

Stemming from the Cold War-era in the USSR, Guardians is an all-new superhero movie about a secret organization of crime fighters assembled from the different nations of the long since disbanded Soviet Union. Meant to embody some of the core values of Communist Russia, the new film directed by Armenian filmmaker Sarik Andreasyan has already turned a few heads state side following the release of its first U.S. trailer and a series of character posters.

Borrowing heavily from the thematic and aesthetic traditions of the ever-burgeoning comic book movie powerhouses that are the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe in the U.S., Guardians looks like a promising alternative take on the likes of such features as The Avengers and Justice League. Just how capably the Russian superhero movie will fare when it sees domestic release remains to be seen, though by the looks of things in the latest full-length trailer, things are coming along rather nicely on this “Russian Avengers” flick.

In the footage featured above, distributor turbofilms teases potential viewers with a thrilling take on the standard superhero team and blockbuster spectacle in Guardians. Featuring actors Sebastien Sisak, Sanzhar Madiyev, Anton Pampushnyy, Alina Lanina, Valeria Shkirando, Stanislav Shirin, and Vyacheslav Razbegaev, the new Russian superhero movie still looks every bit as impressive as it did in its U.S. trailer.

The inclusion of such outlandish central protagonists as those starring front and center in Andreasyan’s new movie should manage to draw a crowd come time of the the theatrical release of Guardians in 2017. Whether those potential viewers will be laughing with or at the action depicted on screen, that’s another matter. There is still more room for another superhero blockbuster at the box office though, making the emergence of a Soviet Union-era team par for the course (however bizarre it might appear to some).

With any luck, Guardians will manage to offer those who have grown bored-to-complacent with garden variety American superhero fare with a Russian equivalent glad to hyper-accentuate and exploit some of the genre’s most exaggerated tropes and clichés. Marvel Studios and DC Entertainment may have cornered the domestic comic book movie market, but Andreasyan and company have certainly made one of their own overseas in Russia – for better or for worse.

Guardians will see theatrical release in the U.S. sometime in 2017. It opens in Russia on February 23rd, 2017.
