He’s been a family man who can’t escape his menial job and a meth making cancer patient, but now Bryan Cranston seems to have taken on a more tepid role: a loving father who wants the best for his daughter. Sounds pretty simple, right?
It would be, if his daughter wasn’t interested in the exaggerated version of James Franco. If you’ve seen other films of Franco’s, you’ll know that he fits easily into a role where he has to party.
That’s when we see Franco with his bare tattooed chest. Megan Mullally sums the moment up perfectly with ‘well, looks like he works out.’ So now we have Cranston, Franco and Mullally (who you’ll remember as the alcoholic, outspoken, shrill Karen from Will & Grace).
There’s also Keegan-Michael Key who’s no stranger to comedic roles. His character is a bit of a mystery, perhaps some kind of martial arts experts? He definitely there to add to the humour.
Either way, the cast list is starting to look like it’s got potential.
Why Him? is due out at Christmas and we may again have the debate that follows the first Die Hard – is it actually a Christmas movie?
There’s some amusing aspects of the trailer, especially the dialogue between Cranston and Franco as they argue about whether Franco can call him dad. Or how about the part nearer the end where Cranston throws a rock at a drone and hits a randomer instead?
It feels like it’s got a ‘Meet the Fockers’ kind of feel to it and I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some euphoric, touching moment between the characters at the end. If you’re stuck for something to do at Christmas, Why Him? will probably provide each viewing, with some occasional laughs.
